PowerPointless to PowerPointful

"PowerPoint is a tool for creating presentations. Nothing more. It is only a TOOL. And a tool is only as powerful as what we do with it."
~Tammy Worchester

Watch and Share
As a group, watch Stacy's About Me.  In your table groups, the person with the coolest shoes is the note-taker.  Go around the table and share one thing that you remember from the presentation and one way you or your students could present information in this format.  Post a comment on this blog recording your discussion (the password is imef).

Explore these presentations:
Discuss
  • Which presentations were effective
  • What made them effective
  • How can these techniques be applied for you?
Review of Key Findings
  • Narration with pictures (visuals) is better than narration alone.
  • People learn better when words are presented as narration rather than text.
  • People learn better from narration & graphics rather than narration, graphics, & text.
  • People learn better when extraneous visual material is excluded.
Practical Implications for better PowerPoint Presentations
  • Presentations must be both verbal & visual.
  • Too much slide information overloads people’s cognitive systems.
  • Can your visuals be understood in 3 seconds? If not, redesign them to support your talk.
  • Slide design & delivery must help people organize, integrate information.
Create
Be mindful of all the points discussed with your peers and create a presentation about you, an author, a book, a poem, or another idea of your choice.  Here are some sources for images:

Eastern Oregon University Podcasting

A podcast is an audio recording, which could be anything from a 10-sec sound to a 30-min radio show, stored as an MP3 file that anybody can download.

The word podcast is also used to mean a podcast channel, i.e., a channel that listeners can "subscribe" to and receive future audio posts, or podcast entries, all for FREE. (For technical readers, a podcast channel is an RSS feed, and each audio post is an enclosure embedded in the RSS feed.)

The result is a new way of sharing audio via the Internet. Imagine having a radio with millions of channels, and being able to have your favorite channels automatically saved for future listening on your PC or iPod. Each channel could range from professionally-produced radio programs to short voice messages recorded by phone. (Gcast Podcasting 101)

4 steps to Podcast Production:

  1. Plan: Storyboard and Write
  2. Produce: Record the pieces
  3. Chop: Edit the pieces
  4. Publish: Share your creation

Explore

Create - this is an activity for the workshop.  We already have Audacity installed on the comptuers.  You can also use any audio-editing software.

Publish - This can be accomplished through posting to a Blog or through an online Podcast provider.

Subscribe - there are multiple ways to subscribe to RSS feeds and to listen to Podcasts.  You can listen on a phone, computer, PDA, or iPod.  To subscribe to podcasts online use services such as Google Reader (handout), Google IG (handout), or Bloglines.  To download and listen to podcasts on a MP3 player or PDA use an application such as iTunes (handout).

Check out this other great resource from SAISD, and their ideas for podcasting with students.

Pendleton - Microsoft Templates

Are you spending your evenings writing welcome letters to parents, carefully ruling seating charts, designing award certificates, and creating learning center signs? Why reinvent the wheel? There are several resources available for finding modifiable templates for teacher and student use.

Microsoft's Template Gallery is always an excellent place to start.

Microsoft also has a template collection specifically for education.  These templates are downloaded from the Download Center and installed directly onto your computer.  Once they are downloaded you access them through the Start Menu.

Other templates are avialable from a variety of sources.  Here are just a few:

Hints:

  • When searching for templates for specific projects always include the application (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the word Template in your search criteria.
  • When using the templates from Microsoft's Download center you may have to lower the security level for your macros.
    • Open the application.
    • Click Tools, Macros, Security
    • Click Low
